I'm a Teenager, Get Me Into There!
Empowering staff at cultural venues to create welcoming environments for teenagers
About this programme
When young people visit an arts or cultural venue as an independent visitor (rather than on a school trip or through a specialist participation programme) they don’t always have a positive experience. This can be because of invisible barriers that haven’t been considered.
Aimed at the staff teams of cultural and heritage venues and libraries, this programme allows staff to better create a welcoming, inclusive environment for the young people they invite into their building. Crafted from extensive research with young people, our programme is uniquely tailored for those who interact with teenagers daily but lack specialised skills or support.
We want to empower professionals to create welcoming environments and successfully engage with teens. Remember - getting it right for teens means getting it right for everyone!
What do we cover?
The course delves into brain science, interpersonal dynamics, and lifelong attitudes toward creativity and curiosity.
Drawing insights from two flagship youth engagement programs delivered by Curious Minds, participants will gain insights into the motivations behind teenage behaviour, enabling better anticipation of their needs and effective communication.
This training is active and action-focused. Participants leave with a set of actionable strategies which you can put straight into practice at your workplace.

Why is this programme important?
Every adult interaction matters when it comes to young people experiencing something new. When visiting cultural venues, these interactions can completely change a young person’s perception of the whole visit, regardless of what they’ve come to see or do, and affects their willingness to engage in the future. The responsibility to get it right is huge.
The programme supports organisations to affirm teens' right to access cultural spaces and recognise the lasting influence of positive teenage experiences.
‘I’m A Teenager… Get Me Into There!’ – was a programme first developed in partnership with national youth charity UFA and the Lancashire Library and Museums Service. It was later redeveloped with the support of Youth Focus North West and 5 museum services as part of our Hope Streets initiative.
